The Vermont Legislature legalized same-sex marriage today by overriding Governor Jim Douglas’s veto by a two-thirds margin in both the state Senate (23-5) and the House (100-49). Vermont now joins Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa as the fourth state to legalize.
Nine years ago, Vermont became the first state in the nation to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples. The first state to legalize same-sex marriage is Massachusetts. Congratulations to the the Vermont Freedom to Marry Coalition. Their hard work has paid off!
